Not unless you want to throw them FASTER and with more ACCURACY.

Um, sorry. I'd list throwing spears as something that's pretty worthless, for a projectile. Too heavy to carry them around in bunches, and they don't do THAT much damage per hit. I think you're better off just calling it a day and using barbed arrows.

To answer the original question, they are called throwing spears because you can throw them. As opposed to all the other spear types which are not allowed to be thrown at all.

Throw is ridiculously under powered. Unless a few extra STR points makes a massive difference, throwing is laughable at best. I ran tests throwing at casters and couldn't to squat for damage, even though there is no lag time, and you can spam it to all hell and back. I've lobbied to have throwing weapons tweaked a bit, due to the fact that it is the only resource that a non-giant barb. can use to hit someone in the third row, but I'm not sure if anything has been done to them.

It would be nice if maybe there was a skill that allowed for throwing such weapons across rooms, but as GL said, it is rather silly to think anyone but a giant could throw a spear a league (seven miles) away.

Hmmm. What if specializing in a thrown weapon allowed it to be thrown into an adjacent room [except in wilderness areas], at the cost of a penalty to the weapon's native accuracy?

It would also be nice if the 'throw' command assigned a damage bonus or penalty based on the thrower's strength [i.e., the force with which it is being hurled at the opponent], but maybe that's asking for a lot. Said positive bonus also wouldn't apply over the aforementioned 1-room distance, in this scenario.

Someone grab 30 of those tanso-steel throwing spears that are free per repop, and join a group as a damage dealer. Proceed to stay first row and start doing this:

throw caster
wear spear
throw caster
wear spear
throw caster.

Please make sure you have auto assist on.

You will notice you do a good deal of damage to two targets. I'll leave you to guess as to why.
