The most successful PKers on SK play short-lived characters who don't have the stamina to make Hero.

Only because of the system, which you coded. In a magical world where there are dragons, demons, and fantastic spells...you also grow old and feeble just like in the real world. A melee character has a window of approximately seven months before they start to lose strength, dexterity and constitution. For centaurs, minotaurs and giants this is crippling because the loss of strength also means a loss of carrying capacity, which further results in a decreased tanking ability due to less chance to dodge (both from weight/strength and dexterity). The loss of strength also makes it impossible to wield some diamond weapons, which further limits your options.

When all of that is considered, it is not surprising that a lot of successful PK characters are short-lived. Your code makes it more beneficial for them to create a new character, unless they are playing a caster.

This is true.

Yet, if anything at least the hero flag incentivizes good PKers to put effort into the other areas of their character. If they work as hard at their character's non-PvP aspects, their PvP capacity actually increases.

Does that make it better? Eh, probably not, yet SK has never been a game where you're only expected to play one or two characters ever. 6 months of active PK is a pretty long run.

This was recognized and its the reason why HERO removes aging penalties. You can attain HERO around the same time you hit middle age and would start to accrue aging penalties. But PKers tend to quit before they even hit middle age. So they'll never find out if they could have gone further as a hero. The message I am preaching is that they should keep playing with the goal of earning the honor.

I'm not sure why people are so hung up on this Hero flag.

It doesn't make you any better or worse at PK
It doesn't make you any better or worse at RP.
It doesn't make you any better or worse at leading a cabal/tribunal/religion.
And it doesn't make you any better or worse at using the mentor system to aid fellow players.

The hero flag has one benefit that is a HUGE advantage, especially if you play a melee character: you do not suffer age penalties. How much better do you think Tolene would have been, if she didn't have to deal with a lower strength and dexterity as she aged?

Not much better. I had 0 dex penalties from aging, yes they were there, but she was fully capable of still hitting 25 dexterity.

She actually got better from aging with the increased charisma (still no idea why elves don't get max charisma out of the gate), and the additional spec. The only possible difference I could see is maybe 1 more hit with the bill in PK while 3x aged. Given that I took her against a barb Syn played, and one of navelic's mercs at the same time while twice aged. I'm not convinced aging is such a crippling penalty.

Not the only reason but definitely one of them in my case, if anecdotal evidence means anything to you, Dulrik.

FWIW, I hate to hear something like this particularly from vets with good contributions. Last year I was involved with one "regulation" encounter that I wish I had handled better. Can't undo it or some opinions. But we'll work to be better than our worst days.

Even if I have had disagreements with some things in the past, I much more appreciate + respect what you've brought. Happy gaming, OA.

I don't know if anyone has suggested this because this thread is too long for my short attention span but I wish we could have a Hero score or scores visible to us. This would create much more transparency.

I think something along the lines of how experience to level is presented would be interesting. Enough transparency to interest those that are near obtaining hero title. But i don't know how that would work considering the hero eligibility doesn't seem to be a static value.

There is a definite score (according to the help file). You just have to have a high enough score to beat out whatever the percentage is.

Maybe like

Hero Score: XX Current Lowest Hero Score: XX Current Highest Hero Score: XX

There appears to be a level of human oversight involved in setting the flags.

It is difficult for me to believe that there has been enough regression to the mean for Aiden to be a hero when Dakken wasn't.

That's an interesting suggestion.
