It already says 'Your mount is too exhausted.' if it runs out of PE. I'm not sure under what circumstances it still gets 'left behind'.

Of course, sometimes I dont know why, but once just before entering a hermit's lair, once upon using recall, and then other times I just didn't understand when or why.

Now I'm trying to pay more attention to it.

Another issue is not being able to pick a lock with the mount 'watching'. Is there a way to tether my mount in the next room so that its sensibilities aren't offended while I try picking a lock?

It just happened again

You see the barrier peaks.

You ride a bumble bee west.
You are forced to leave your mount behind.

The barrier peaks
You are above the tree line in mountainous terrain. Little
h^^^^hy bits of scrub grass are the only green vegetation you see. From
h^^*hhh this altitude it appears you could reach out and touch a cloud.
ph^^^h? It's mostly clear, very hot, and there is absolutely no wind.

Obvious exits: n e s w nw ne sw se

I didn't notice until much later. The notice was in green, just like the rest of the message

I'm having a hard time not feeling a sense of 'awww, that's so cute' seeing a little sprite riding a bumblebee over some mountains, then losing her companion and becoming a sad little sprite.

However, yeah, I get my mount overtired a lot too and have to word of recall to find him again.

Suggestion:

auto dismount -- Leave mount behind if it cannot go on.

on means you ditch your mount whenever and you get bold yellow "You are forced to leave your mount behind."

off means if your mount won't move, it won't let you go anywhere.

I'm in support of this.

Eh, I don't like it for some of the PK implications. If you're running away on a mount with that auto toggled wrong, it'll be the end of your day.

I like the idea of making it more brightly colored as if my character noticed it more and actually show the dismount so it breaks up the space a bit more. I would even go so far as to add a message that automatically tells you when your mount gets below a certain percentage of PE. Something like "&1 pants heavily from exhaustion" would be wonderful. I'd set it somewhere around 15 or 10% to give the character enough time to slow down and maybe find a decent place to rest up a bit.

It is worse than that. When I went looking for my bumble bee, I stumbled into orcs and died!

If you have an client that supports sound. Make a sound trigger. The idea to make the message a bit more bold in color is a good idea. Considering your char is going to know it is dismounting it should also be made clear as possible to the player.

Pets that aren't flying and can't climb are incapable of moving into the mountains.

If you went through a door or something, it's possible that your pet was too large to fit in.

Normal recall doesn't take your pet home with you.

You also won't have problems picking the lock with your pet watching once you get a few more levels under your belt.
