At least he knows the difference between a username and an e-mail address.
Anyhow, I think "greet" implies friendliness. You can know who people are without being their friend and having been formally introduced to them.
A lot of people want to greet and know everybody, but sometimes it just doesn't work that way. It's the same in real life.
